Pop-Idiom Music
in Worship and Evangelism
by Dr Peter Masters
Dr Peter Masters is minister of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, London,
England (C.H. Spurgeon's church) and has kindly granted us permission
to reproduce "Pop-Idiom Music" here. If you have any questions
or queries about this article, please feel free to write to Dr Masters
at the address given below, or
contact us at Freedom Ministries.
Many of the arguments advanced in
these pages were originally expressed in a
magazine article written jointly by the Rev
Michael C Buss and myself in 1969. This
later appeared in booklet form in 1972.
Additional material was published in 'The
Sword & Trowel' in 1980 and 82.
As this short appraisal goes to press a
more substantial and powerfully argued
book has appeared on the same subject
from the British evangelist John Blanchard
(and others) entitled 'Pop Goes the
Gospel', published by The Evangelical
Press. We do hope that the attention now
being given to this issue will help numerous
young believers to recognise the very
great mistake which has been made by the
adoption of pop-idiom music in the service
of the Lord.
This 'booklet' is-not really addressed to
the hard-rock extreme, for reasons explained
in section 10. (This receives excellent
treatment in John Blanchard's book.)
These arguments are intended to apply to
the 'softer' modified form of pop-idiom
music so widely employed in churches
today.
